Gas Heater Service & Repairs in Geelong
A gas heater can look and sound fine while it’s spilling carbon monoxide, a gas you can’t see or smell. That’s why Energy Safe Victoria recommends every gas heater is serviced at least every two years by a qualified gasfitter, including a test for carbon monoxide spillage. Our gas heater service in Geelong covers exactly that, along with the cleaning and adjustments that keep a heater running well.
In the last 12 months we’ve done 61 heater service and repair jobs across Geelong, the Bellarine and the Surf Coast. Every heater we service gets a combustion and spillage test with a calibrated analyser before it goes back into use.
Heater servicing is Type A appliance servicing work, a specialised class of gasfitting in Victoria, so it’s worth knowing who you’re letting in. Our guide explains how to check a plumber’s licence in Victoria.
Our Gas Heater Services
Servicing, repairs and straight advice on when a heater is better replaced than fixed.
Gas Heater Servicing
A service is more than a quick look. Energy Safe Victoria explains that dust and lint can block burners and soot up the heat exchanger and flue, filters and fans can clog, and safety controls can wear out and fail – and any of these can increase the risk of a heater spilling carbon monoxide.
We clean and check the heater, its flue and its ventilation, then test for carbon monoxide spillage with a calibrated analyser. Energy Safe Victoria also recommends asking for a service report and keeping a note of the date, so you know when the next service is due.
Gas Heater Repairs
When a heater won’t ignite, the pilot keeps dropping out, the flame looks different or it shuts itself off, we find the cause and fix it. Common faults include a worn thermocouple, a blocked pilot or burner, ignition faults and gas supply problems.
Energy Safe Victoria says any change in how a heater runs, such as the flame changing from its usual colour, means a qualified gasfitter needs to inspect it and check it for carbon monoxide leakage. Turn it off until it’s been looked at.
Ducted Gas Heating Service
Ducted gas heating needs the same regular servicing as a wall or space heater – Energy Safe Victoria and the Building and Plumbing Commission recommend central heaters are serviced every two years. We service and repair the gas side of the unit: burner, gas supply, flue and the carbon monoxide spillage test.
If a unit is near the end of its life, we’ll tell you plainly whether a repair is worth it.
Types of Gas Heaters We Service
Energy Safe Victoria says any gas heater can spill carbon monoxide, old or new, so all of these need regular servicing.
Gas Wall Heaters
Wall furnaces and wall-mounted gas heaters are easy to forget about until the first cold night. We clean the burner and pilot, check the flue and ventilation, and test for carbon monoxide spillage so the heater is ready for winter.
Gas Space Heaters
Freestanding and built-in space heaters, including open-flued models. Energy Safe Victoria says open-flued heaters can spill carbon monoxide more easily than other types, particularly when exhaust fans are running, so keeping up the two-yearly service really counts with these heaters.
Ducted Gas Heating
Central heating units in the roof space or under the floor. We service and repair the gas side of the unit – burner, gas supply, flue and carbon monoxide spillage test – and give you straight advice when a unit is near the end of its life.
Decorative Log Fires
Gas log fires are on Energy Safe Victoria’s list of heaters that can spill carbon monoxide. They need the same regular servicing as any other gas heater, with the burner, flue and ventilation looked at and a spillage test before they go back into use.
Common Gas Heater Problems We Fix
These are the heater faults we get called out for around Geelong.
- Heater Won’t Ignite: A faulty igniter, a worn thermocouple or a gas supply problem can stop a heater lighting. We test each part and fix the one that’s failed.
- Pilot Keeps Going Out: Debris in the pilot assembly, a tired thermocouple or draughts are common causes. Don’t keep relighting it – get the cause found.
- Flame Has Changed Colour: Energy Safe Victoria says a flame that changes from its usual colour means the heater needs a qualified gasfitter to inspect it and check for carbon monoxide leakage.
- Heater Shuts Itself Off: Open-flued space heaters built to the newer standard shut down if they spill combustion products for more than 15 minutes, and a gasfitter has to make the installation safe and reset them. Worn safety controls can also cause cut-outs.
- Soot Marks or Poor Heating: Soot around the heater or a heater that runs poorly can mean dust and lint have blocked the burners and sooted up the heat exchanger or flue.
Carbon Monoxide Warning Signs – Act Fast
Energy Safe Victoria lists symptoms that could mean carbon monoxide is leaking from a gas heater: dizziness, feeling sick or nauseous, headaches, people or pets getting sick at the same time, and feeling unwell only when you’re at home. If you notice them, leave the house and get into fresh air, turn off all gas appliances, open windows and doors, and call Nurse-on-Call on 1300 60 60 24, see a doctor or dial 000 in an emergency.
Don’t use the heater again until a qualified gasfitter has checked it. Call us on 0447 134 432 – gas emergencies are covered by our 24/7 emergency plumbing service, including weekends and public holidays. If you can smell gas, follow our steps for what to do if you smell gas.

Call 0447 134 432 or send the form. Tell us the heater type, roughly how old it is and when it was last serviced.
Step 2 – Service or Diagnose
We clean and check the heater, its flue and ventilation, and find the cause of any fault.
Step 3 – Fixed Price for Any Repairs
If parts or repairs are needed, we explain what’s involved and agree a fixed price before we do the work.
Step 4 – Spillage Test & Handover
We test for carbon monoxide spillage before the heater goes back into use and tell you when the next service is due.
Gas Heater Service Costs – What to Expect
The cost of a heater service or repair depends on the type of heater, how long since it was last serviced, how easy it is to reach – ducted units in the roof or under the floor take longer – and any parts it needs.
We explain what’s involved and agree a fixed price before we start, with zero hidden fees, so you can decide whether a repair is worth it or a replacement makes more sense.
Booking your service before you need the heater means any fault is found before the cold weather, not during it.

Gas Heater Service & Repairs FAQs
At least every two years. Energy Safe Victoria and the Building and Plumbing Commission recommend that gas space heaters, central heaters and gas water heaters are serviced once every two years by a qualified gasfitter. If your heater is old, open-flued or hasn’t been serviced for a while, book it in before winter.
A proper service covers cleaning the burners, checking the flue, ventilation and controls, and testing for carbon monoxide spillage. Energy Safe Victoria says a comprehensive service must include a carbon monoxide analyser test for spillage. Every heater we service gets that test with a calibrated analyser before it goes back into use.
Yes. Energy Safe Victoria says any gas heater can spill carbon monoxide, old or new, including central heating, space heaters, wall furnaces and decorative log fires. You can’t see or smell it. A faulty or unserviced appliance, a blocked flue or poor ventilation can all raise carbon monoxide levels, which is why regular servicing matters.
It’s worth having one as a back-up. Energy Safe Victoria recommends a carbon monoxide alarm as a back-up measure, but says it should never replace regular servicing, and an alarm only reads the spot where it’s installed. Hard-wired alarms must be installed by a licensed electrician.
Energy Safe Victoria advises against it. Running a kitchen rangehood or bathroom exhaust fan at the same time as a gas heater can create negative pressure, which can draw carbon monoxide into living spaces. Open-flued heaters are the most at risk. Leave a window open for fresh air when the heater is running, especially if it’s open-flued.
Yes. We service and repair the gas side of ducted heating – the burner, gas supply, flue and a carbon monoxide spillage test – across Geelong, the Bellarine and the Surf Coast. Central heaters should be serviced every two years like any other gas heater. Tell us where the unit sits, roof space or under the floor, when you book.
It depends on the heater’s age, condition and type. Energy Safe Victoria suggests considering a replacement if a heater is old or hasn’t been serviced for several years, and recommends room-sealed heaters, which draw combustion air from outside. Old open-flued heaters without safety shutdown features can no longer be sold in Victoria. We’ll give you straight advice on yours.
