Low Water Pressure and Pressure Limiting Valves in Geelong
Water pressure problems go both ways. Too little and showers dribble, the washing machine takes forever to fill and two taps can’t run at once. Too much and pipes bang, taps and appliances wear out early and the relief valve on your hot water system can dribble constantly. A pressure limiting valve (PLV) sits on the incoming water line and keeps the pressure inside your home at a safe, steady level.
In the last 12 months we’ve done 79 water pressure jobs across Geelong: low-pressure call-outs, pressure limiting valve replacements and problems at the water meter connection. We diagnose the underlying cause first, whether it’s a blockage, a valve or a pipe, and fix it at the source, so you’re not paying for a new valve you didn’t need.
Under the Plumbing Code of Australia, the cold water outlets inside a building generally need a static pressure of no more than 500 kPa. Where the mains supply runs higher than that, a pressure limiting valve is the usual way to bring it down.
Our Water Pressure Services
Whether the pressure is too low, too high or noisy, we find out why and fix the cause.
Pressure Limiting Valve Replacement
Pressure limiting valves wear out like any other valve. A failing one can starve the house of pressure, leak from its body, or stop holding the pressure down so the full mains pressure gets through. We test the pressure, check the valve and replace it if that’s the fault, choosing a valve that suits your home’s plumbing and appliances.
Where a home on high mains pressure has no valve at all, we can fit one on the incoming line after the water meter, where it can be reached for servicing later.
Low Water Pressure Diagnosis and Repairs
Low water pressure has plenty of possible causes: a part-closed stop tap or meter valve, a failing pressure limiting valve, scale in shower heads and aerators, a leak somewhere on the line, or old galvanised pipes. Barwon Water notes that badly corroded galvanised pipes can reduce water pressure and stain toilets and laundry.
We start with simple checks to narrow it down: hot or cold, one tap or all of them, all day or only at busy times. Then we fix it at the source, whether that’s a new valve, a cleared fitting, a leak repair or replacing a run of old pipe.
Water Hammer and Noisy Pipes
Water hammer is the bang or thud you hear when a tap, dishwasher or washing machine shuts off quickly and the moving water stops all at once. High pressure makes it worse, and pipes that aren’t clipped down properly make it louder.
We check the pressure first, then fix what’s causing it: fitting or replacing a pressure limiting valve, adding a water hammer arrestor near the tap or appliance, and re-securing loose pipework where we can reach it.
Pressure Problems We Diagnose
Where the problem shows up tells us where to look first. These are the four patterns we see most.
Low pressure everywhere
If every tap is weak, the cause is usually near the front of the property: the meter valve, the pressure limiting valve or the pipe from the meter to the house. If your neighbours are affected as well, it may be the street supply, so contact Barwon Water.
One tap or shower only
When just one outlet is weak, the fault is usually in that fitting. Scale-blocked aerators and shower heads, a worn mixer cartridge or a part-closed isolation valve under the sink are the usual suspects, and most are quick fixes once they’re found.
Weak hot water only
If the cold is fine but the hot is weak, the problem is likely in the hot water system or its valves, such as a blocked strainer, a faulty tempering valve or sediment build-up. That work is covered on our hot water repairs page.
Pressure that’s too high
Banging pipes, taps that spray hard, appliances that fail early or a hot water relief valve that dribbles all the time can all point to high pressure. A working pressure limiting valve brings it back down to a level your plumbing and appliances are designed for.
Common Water Pressure Problems We Fix
These are the signs that usually bring people to us.
- Weak shower: Often a scaled-up shower head or a failing mixer cartridge. If every tap in the house is weak too, it’s a supply-side problem.
- Sudden drop in pressure: A sudden drop can mean a failed pressure limiting valve, a burst pipe somewhere on the property or a supply problem in the street. For burst pipes, see our leak detection and burst pipe repairs.
- Banging pipes: Water hammer usually comes from high pressure combined with fast-closing valves, and over time it can shake joints loose.
- Hot water relief valve dribbling: A relief valve that dribbles all the time, not just while the water heats, can point to high mains pressure or a faulty valve. Don’t tamper with it; have it checked by a plumber.
- Leaking valve at the meter: A pressure limiting valve that leaks from its body or fittings needs replacing. Barwon Water looks after the meter and the pipe up to it; everything after the meter is the property owner’s responsibility.
Fast Help When the Pressure Drops
A sudden loss of pressure can mean a burst pipe on your property. Check for water where it shouldn’t be, then read your water meter with every tap off and check it again a little later: if the reading has moved, water is escaping somewhere (here’s how plumbers find hidden leaks). If you find a burst, turn off the water at the main and call our emergency plumbers on 0447 134 432, 24/7.
For pressure that has crept down over time, we book you in as soon as we can and work through it step by step until we find the cause.

Our Simple Water Pressure Process
Here’s how we get your water pressure back to where it should be.
Step 1 – Contact Our Team
Call or book online and tell us what you’re noticing: weak taps, banging pipes or a leak near the meter.
Step 2 – Test and Diagnose
We check the pressure and work through the likely causes until we find the real one.
Step 3 – Fixed-Price Quote
We explain what’s wrong and give you a fixed price before any work starts.
Step 4 – Repair and Re-test
We fix it, check the pressure again and make sure everything’s working properly before we leave.
Water Pressure Repair Costs – What to Expect
What a water pressure repair costs depends on the cause. Cleaning a blocked aerator or replacing a shower head is a small job; replacing a pressure limiting valve takes longer; replacing a run of old galvanised pipe is a bigger job that depends on its length and how easy it is to reach.
That’s why we diagnose first. Once we know the cause, you get a fixed price before we start, with zero hidden fees and our workmanship guarantee.
Water Pressure Repairs Across Geelong
Barwon Water says the pressure at your property depends on how far it is from the local storage tank or basin and how high it sits, with low-lying properties generally getting higher pressure. That’s why two homes in the same suburb can have very different pressure, and why we test rather than assume.
We do water pressure work right across the region, including Armstrong Creek, Leopold, Lara, Highton and Grovedale, plus the Bellarine and the Surf Coast.
Low Water Pressure & Pressure-Limiting Valves FAQs
A pressure limiting valve reduces the higher pressure coming in from the water main to a safe, steady level for the plumbing inside your home. It protects taps, hoses, appliances and your hot water system from wear and helps prevent water hammer. It’s usually fitted on the incoming line just after the water meter.
Signs of a faulty pressure limiting valve include a sudden drop in pressure across the house, water leaking from the valve body, pressure that surges or bangs, or a hot water relief valve that starts dribbling. A plumber can confirm it by testing the pressure on both sides of the valve.
Low water pressure in a house is usually caused by a part-closed valve, a failing pressure limiting valve, scale in shower heads and aerators, a hidden leak or old corroded pipes. Check whether it’s every tap or one, hot or cold, and whether your neighbours are affected; that tells you where the problem is likely to be.
Water hammer happens when fast-moving water is stopped suddenly by a quick-closing tap or appliance valve, sending a shock through the pipes. High pressure and loose pipes make it worse. The usual fixes are controlling the pressure with a pressure limiting valve, fitting a water hammer arrestor and re-securing loose pipework.
Under the Plumbing Code of Australia, cold water outlets inside a building generally need a static pressure of no more than 500 kPa. Where the mains supply is higher, a pressure limiting valve is used to bring it down. If you’re not sure what your home gets, a plumber can test it.
It depends on where the problem is. Barwon Water is responsible for the water meter and the supply pipe up to it, and the property owner is responsible for the pipes and plumbing after the meter. If your neighbours have low pressure too, contact Barwon Water. If it’s only your home, it’s usually a job for a plumber.
Often, yes. If the banging comes from high mains pressure, a working pressure limiting valve reduces the force of the water when taps and appliances shut off. If the pressure is already fine, the fix is more likely a water hammer arrestor or re-clipping loose pipes, so we test before recommending either.
