Blocked Toilet Plumber in Geelong
A blocked toilet can’t wait until the weekend. Whether the water is rising to the rim, the flush has gone weak or it has already overflowed, we come out, clear it and check that it flushes and drains properly before we leave.
The first thing we work out is where the blockage is. If it’s only the toilet, it’s usually in the pan or the pipe just behind it – too much paper, wipes, or something dropped in by accident. If the shower or basin is also slow, or the toilet gurgles when other fixtures drain, the blockage is further down the sewer line and needs a different approach.
Toilets are everyday work for us: in the last 12 months we’ve done 357 jobs involving toilets and cisterns across Geelong. When you call, you talk to a local plumber, not a call centre.
Our Blocked Toilet Services
From a toilet that won’t flush to one that has overflowed across the floor, here’s how we handle it.
Blocked Toilet Clearing
We clear the blockage from the pan and the pipe behind it using proper drain-clearing equipment, then flush several times to make sure it’s fully clear – not just draining slowly again. If something solid has been dropped in, we retrieve it rather than push it further down the line, where it can cause a bigger blockage later.
Overflowing Toilets
An overflowing toilet is a hygiene problem as well as a plumbing one. Turn off the small tap at the wall behind or beside the toilet to stop the cistern refilling, stop flushing, and keep children and pets away from the water. Then call us – we’re on call 24/7 and will give you an honest arrival time over the phone.
If the toilet overflows when someone uses the shower or washing machine, the sewer line itself is blocked. That needs clearing further down, often with a high-pressure jetter – see our blocked drains Geelong page.
Toilets That Won’t Flush Properly
A weak flush or a bowl that empties slowly is often a partial blockage building in the pan or drain. It can also be a fault in the cistern – a worn valve or a flush mechanism that isn’t letting enough water through. We check both. Leaking and running cisterns have their own page: tap, toilet, shower and sink repairs.
What Blocks a Toilet
Most blocked toilets come down to one of four things.
Wipes and Too Much Paper
Barwon Water lists wet wipes among the common causes of sewer blockages. Wipes, tissues and paper towel don’t break down like toilet paper, and a big wad of paper can also stop a toilet in one go.
Objects Dropped or Flushed
Toys, toothbrushes, phones and sanitary items all end up in toilets. Once something solid is stuck in the trap, plunging can push it further in. We retrieve it, and if it has gone past the pan, we find it in the pipe.
Sewer Line Blockages
Sometimes the toilet is fine and the sewer line behind it is blocked by roots, wipes or a broken pipe. Signs include gurgling, more than one slow fixture and the gully outside overflowing. These need clearing at the source, not at the pan.
Blocked Toilets in Rentals
Under Victorian renting rules, a blocked or broken toilet system is an urgent repair, which the rental provider must have fixed immediately. Tenants should call their agent first. We work with property managers, landlords and tenants across Geelong.
Common Blocked Toilet Problems We Fix
These are the signs that a toilet, or the drain behind it, is blocked.
- Water Rising to the Rim: When the water climbs instead of draining, stop flushing. Another flush only adds more water to a bowl with nowhere to go.
- Toilet Won’t Flush: A flush that swirls but doesn’t clear the bowl usually means a partial blockage in the pan or the pipe just past it.
- Gurgling Toilet: Gurgling or bubbling when the shower or basin drains means air is being pushed past a blockage further down the sewer line.
- Overflowing Toilet: Water spilling over the rim needs quick action. Turn off the tap at the cistern and call – it’s an emergency job.
- Sewage Smell in the Bathroom: A sewer smell around the toilet can mean a blockage, a failed seal at the base of the pan or a problem in the drain. We find which one it is.
- Shower Backing Up When You Flush: Water rising in the shower or floor waste after a flush means the main line is blocked. Stop using water until it’s cleared.

Our Simple Blocked Toilet Process
Here’s what happens from your call to a toilet that flushes properly again.
Step 1 – Contact Our Team
Call or send the form. Tell us whether it’s overflowing and whether other drains are slow, so we know how urgent it is.
Step 2 – Find the Blockage
We check whether the blockage is in the pan, the pipe behind it or the sewer line, and agree a fixed price before we start.
Step 3 – Clear It
We clear the toilet or the line with the right equipment, retrieve anything that shouldn’t be there, and test it with several flushes.
Step 4 – Clean Up and Advise
We leave the bathroom clean and tell you what caused the blockage, so you can stop it happening again.
Blocked Toilet Costs – What to Expect
What a blocked toilet costs to fix depends on where the blockage is. A simple blockage in the pan is a short job. An object stuck deep in the trap can mean taking the toilet off the floor to get it out, and a blockage in the sewer line may need the high-pressure jetter. After-hours callouts can also affect the price.
We explain what’s involved and agree a fixed price before we start, with no hidden fees. If the blockage turns out to be in Barwon Water’s section of the sewer, the rules on who pays are different – our guide to who pays for a blocked sewer explains them.
Blocked Toilet Repairs Across Geelong
We clear blocked toilets across Greater Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula and the Surf Coast – including Leopold, Armstrong Creek, Corio, Grovedale, Belmont, Lara, Highton and Newtown.

Blocked Toilet Plumber FAQs
A toilet that won’t flush is usually partly blocked in the pan or the pipe just behind it, often by too much paper or wipes. It can also be a cistern fault, such as a worn flush valve. If other drains are slow too, the blockage is in the sewer line.
Turn off the small tap at the wall beside or behind the toilet to stop the cistern refilling, and don’t flush again. Keep children and pets away from the water, lay down towels and call a plumber. We’re on call 24/7 on 0447 134 432.
Yes, a toilet plunger is a sensible first try for a simple blockage. Use gentle, steady pushes rather than force, and never after pouring in a chemical cleaner. If it doesn’t clear after a few tries, or other drains are slow, stop and call. Our guide to unblocking a drain safely explains more.
If only the toilet is affected, the blockage is usually in the pan or the pipe behind it. Barwon Water lists gurgling toilets and floor drains, slow sinks and baths, strong smells and sewage rising in the yard’s inspection shaft or overflow gully as signs of a sewer blockage.
Only if they meet the Australian flushable products standard. Barwon Water says only poo, pee and toilet paper should be flushed, or wipes that comply with AS/NZS 5328:2022, and warns that “biodegradable” is not the same as meeting the standard. If in doubt, put wipes in the bin.
Yes. Consumer Affairs Victoria lists a blocked or broken toilet system as an urgent repair, and rental providers must make urgent repairs immediately. Renters should contact their agent or landlord straight away using the emergency number they were given, and confirm the request in writing.
It depends where the blockage is. Barwon Water maintains the sewer up to the first inspection opening on your property, or one metre inside the boundary, and covers reasonable costs for blockages in that section. Past that point, the property owner pays. Our blocked sewer guide explains the details.
