Stormwater Plumbing in Geelong
Your stormwater drains carry rain from the roof, gutters, downpipes and paved areas away from the house – usually underground to the kerb or a council drain. They’re a completely separate system from the sewer. When a stormwater drain blocks, you see it in the next downpour: water spilling out at the base of a downpipe, pooling against the walls, or bubbling up out of a yard pit.
In the last 12 months we’ve done 64 stormwater jobs across Geelong. Most come down to the same few causes – leaves and silt washed off the roof, tree roots in the pipe, or a pipe that has cracked or been crushed. We find which one it is, clear it, and repair the pipe if it needs it.
Stormwater on your property is your responsibility up to the point where it leaves. The City of Greater Geelong says property owners are responsible for their stormwater system up to and including their legal point of discharge, which may be outside the property – for example, the kerb connection.
Our Stormwater Drain Services
Whether it’s a blockage, a broken pipe or water going where it shouldn’t, we work through the whole system from downpipe to kerb.
Blocked Stormwater Drain Clearing
Leaves, silt, sand, roof grit and roots build up in stormwater pipes until they stop flowing. We clear the line with a high-pressure water jetter, which breaks up the blockage and flushes the pipe through to the outlet, then run water from the downpipes to check everything drains freely.
If the same drain blocks every winter, there’s usually a reason in the pipe itself. A drain camera inspection shows whether it’s roots, a dip in the pipe or a broken section.
Stormwater Drain Repair
Cracked, crushed or root-damaged stormwater pipes let water soak into the ground beside the house instead of carrying it away. We locate the damaged section, then repair or replace it so the water reaches the outlet again.
Under Victoria’s Plumbing Regulations 2018, work on a below-ground stormwater drain up to the point of discharge is classed as drainage work – plumbing work, not a DIY job. We quote the repair as a fixed price before any digging starts.
Downpipes, Pits and Grates
A lot of stormwater trouble starts at the connections: a downpipe that has come away from the drain below, a yard pit full of silt, or a driveway grate that can’t keep up. We clear and reconnect them so roof water goes into the drain, not under the slab. For gutters and the downpipes themselves, see gutter and downpipe repairs.
Where Stormwater Problems Start
Working out where the water stops is the quickest way to the fix.
Roof, Gutters and Downpipes
Leaves and grit wash off the roof and into the downpipes in every storm. If the downpipe overflows at the bottom, the blockage is usually in the drain just below it. Keeping gutters clear is the simplest way to protect the whole system.
Yard and Driveway Pits
Pits and grates collect water from paths, driveways and lawns, along with soil, mulch and leaves. When the silt trap fills, the pit overflows in heavy rain. We clean them out and clear the pipe leading away from them.
Underground Pipes
The pipes between the house and the kerb are where roots, cracks and crushed sections cause trouble. The signs are a downpipe that backs up, a patch of lawn that stays wet, or a sinking spot in the garden.
The Kerb Outlet
Many properties drain to an outlet in the kerb. If it’s blocked by silt or leaves, water backs up all the way to the house. The outlet and the pipe to it can be part of your system: owners are responsible up to and including the legal point of discharge.
Common Stormwater Problems We Fix
If you’ve noticed any of these during or after rain, your stormwater drain needs attention.
- Downpipe Overflowing at the Base: Water spilling out where the downpipe meets the ground means the drain below it is blocked or the connection has failed.
- Water Pooling Against the House: Water sitting against walls or under the floor can lead to damp and damage. It usually means the drain isn’t carrying water away.
- Yard Pit Overflowing: A pit that fills and overflows in rain has a full silt trap or a blocked outlet pipe.
- Soggy or Sinking Patch in the Lawn: A spot that stays wet after rain, or starts to sink, often sits above a cracked or broken pipe.
- Roots in the Stormwater Pipe: Roots get into joints and cracks and catch leaves and silt. We cut them back and check the pipe for damage.
- Kerb Outlet Blocked: If nothing comes out at the kerb in rain, the pipe or outlet is blocked somewhere along the way.
Fast Help Before the Next Downpour
A blocked stormwater drain is easy to forget on a dry day and impossible to ignore in a storm. If water is coming into the house or pooling against the walls, call us – we’re on call 24/7 and will give you an honest arrival time over the phone. For everything else, we book same-day service whenever scheduling allows.
If you have a rainwater tank, check where its overflow goes. An overflow left running onto the ground can soak the same spot beside the house every time it rains.

Our Simple Stormwater Drain Process
Here’s how we get a blocked or broken stormwater drain working again.
Step 1 – Contact Our Team
Call or send the form. Tell us where the water backs up and when – every rain, or only in heavy storms.
Step 2 – Trace the Problem
We follow the system from downpipe to outlet to find where the water stops, using the camera where needed, and agree a fixed price.
Step 3 – Clear or Repair
We jet the line clear, clean out pits and repair or replace any damaged pipe.
Step 4 – Test and Tidy
We run water through the system to prove it drains to the outlet, then clean up and explain how to keep it clear.
Stormwater Drain Costs – What to Expect
The cost of clearing or repairing a stormwater drain depends on what’s causing the problem and how easy it is to reach. A silted-up pit or a blockage near a downpipe is a quick job. Roots along a long run of pipe take longer to jet out, and a broken pipe under paving or a driveway costs more to repair than one under the lawn. After-hours callouts can also affect the price.
We trace the problem first, explain what’s involved and agree a fixed price before we start, with no hidden fees. If the blockage turns out to be in a council-owned pit or pipe rather than yours, we’ll tell you, so you can report it to the City of Greater Geelong.

Stormwater Drains FAQs
The property owner is responsible for their own stormwater drains up to and including the legal point of discharge, which may be outside the property, such as the kerb connection. The City of Greater Geelong maintains the larger council-owned pits and pipes that may serve more than one property.
No. Stormwater carries rain from roofs, downpipes and paved areas to council drains, while the sewer carries waste from toilets, showers and sinks to Barwon Water’s sewerage system. They’re separate pipes with separate rules – our blocked sewer guide explains the sewer side.
The clearest sign is water overflowing at the base of a downpipe during rain. Other signs are a yard pit that overflows, water pooling against the house, a lawn patch that stays soggy, or nothing coming out of the kerb outlet. Any of these means the water isn’t getting away.
Yes. Roots get in through joints and cracks and catch leaves and silt until the pipe blocks. The City of Greater Geelong says tree root intrusion into pipes, both private and council-owned, is its biggest cause of pipe damage. Jetting clears the roots, and a camera inspection shows whether the pipe needs repair.
Yes. Under Victoria’s Plumbing Regulations 2018, installing, repairing or maintaining a below-ground stormwater drain up to the point of discharge is classed as drainage work, which is plumbing work. Clearing your gutters and the grate on a yard pit is fine to do yourself.
No. The City of Greater Geelong says residents must not lift or move stormwater pit lids under any circumstances, because it can cause injury and damage. If you think a council pit or pipe is blocked, report it to the City and they will look at it.
Keep gutters, downpipes and driveway pits clear of leaves and silt – the City of Greater Geelong recommends regular clearing to stop blockages. Avoid planting trees right over stormwater pipes, and have a drain checked if the same downpipe overflows every time it rains.
