Water Filter Installation in Geelong
Geelong’s mains water is treated and disinfected by Barwon Water before it reaches your tap. Barwon Water disinfects drinking water with chlorine, or with chloramine in some areas (including Ocean Grove, Clifton Springs and Portarlington), and keeps a small amount in the water as it travels through the pipes. For most homes, a filter is about taste, smell or sediment, and the convenience of filtered water on tap, rather than making the water safe.
We’ve done 15 water filter jobs in the last 12 months, and the plumbing behind a filter is what we do every day: tapping into the supply, fitting valves, drilling for a new tap, and making sure nothing leaks. We’ll talk you through which type suits your home before anything is fitted.
Our Water Filter Services
From a single filtered tap at the kitchen sink to a filter on the whole house, here’s what we install.
Under-Sink Water Filter Installation
An under-sink filter sits in the cupboard below the kitchen sink and feeds filtered water to its own tap, so your main mixer stays as it is. We connect the filter to the cold supply with an isolation valve, fit the filtered-water tap in the sink or benchtop, and position the housings so the cartridges are easy to change.
If your sink already has a spare tap hole, the job is simpler. If not, we’ll tell you what’s involved in adding one before we quote.
Whole-House Water Filters
A whole-house filter goes on the main water line where it enters the home, so every tap and appliance gets filtered water. It’s usually fitted outside, after the water meter, with isolation valves either side so the cartridge can be changed without shutting the whole house down for long.
Whole-house filters need to be sized for your home’s water use. An undersized filter, or a cartridge left too long, can noticeably cut the flow to your taps and showers.
Fridge and Rainwater Tank Filters
Fridges with chilled water or ice makers often use an inline filter on the water line. We fit the filter where it can be reached and connect the line with its own isolation valve; see our fridge and appliance connections for more.
Homes on tank water often fit a sediment filter after the pump to catch grit and debris before it reaches the taps. Our rainwater tank and pump service covers the tank side of the system.
Types of Water Filters We Install
The right filter depends on where you want filtered water and what you want it to do.
Under-sink filters
The most popular choice for drinking water. The filter sits in the kitchen cupboard and feeds its own filtered-water tap, leaving your main mixer untouched. It suits households that mainly want better-tasting water for drinking and cooking without filtering the whole house.
Whole-house filters
Fitted on the main line where water enters the home, so every tap, shower and appliance gets filtered water. It suits homes that want filtered water everywhere, or that see sediment in the supply. It needs sizing so it doesn’t restrict the flow.
Fridge inline filters
A small filter on the water line to a fridge with chilled water or an ice maker. Some fridges have a built-in filter and some need an inline one. We fit it where you can reach it, with an isolation valve on the line to the fridge.
Tank water filters
For homes using rainwater, a sediment filter after the pump catches grit, leaf matter and other debris before it reaches your taps. It’s fitted with isolation valves so the cartridge can be changed easily, and it works alongside a well-maintained tank and pump.
Common Water Filter Problems We Fix
If you already have a filter that isn’t working as it should, these are the usual culprits.
- Slow flow from the filter tap: Usually a cartridge that is overdue for a change, or a kinked supply line under the sink.
- Leaking filter housing: A worn O-ring or a housing that wasn’t seated properly. Turn off the isolation valve and call us before the cupboard base is damaged.
- Taste or smell coming back: Most often the cartridge has reached the end of its life. Change it at the interval the manufacturer recommends.
- Low pressure after a whole-house filter: A clogged cartridge or an undersized filter can cut the flow to every tap. We check the filter and the sizing.
- Brown or discoloured water: Barwon Water notes that ageing galvanised pipes can turn water brown or rust-coloured. A filter can catch some sediment, but it won’t fix a corroding pipe, so we check the pipes first.
Booking a Water Filter Installation
A new water filter isn’t an emergency, so we book it in at a time that suits you, often the same day when the schedule allows. Tell us the type of filter you have in mind, or that you’re not sure, and we’ll come prepared.
If a filter housing or supply line has split and water is spreading, turn off the isolation valve or the water main and call 0447 134 432. Our emergency plumbers are on call 24/7.

Water Filter Installation Costs – What to Expect
The cost of a water filter installation depends on the type of filter, where it goes and what the plumbing needs. An under-sink filter with a spare tap hole is a simpler job than one that needs a new hole in the benchtop. A whole-house filter takes more work again, because it goes on the main line and needs isolation valves either side.
We look at your set-up, explain what’s involved and give you a fixed price before we start, with zero hidden fees. Ongoing costs are mainly replacement cartridges, so ask about cartridge life before you choose a system; like any part of your plumbing, regular maintenance saves money in the long run.
Water Filter Installation Across Geelong
We install water filters from our base near Leopold right across Geelong, the Bellarine and the Surf Coast, including Drysdale and Clifton Springs, Ocean Grove and Torquay.
Homes in town are usually on Barwon Water mains, while some properties on the edges of the region rely on tank water. Either way, tell us your set-up and we’ll recommend a filter that suits it.
Water Filter Installation FAQs
An under-sink water filter treats the water going to a separate filtered-water tap at your kitchen sink, mainly to improve taste and smell and catch sediment. It sits in the cupboard below the sink, connects to the cold supply and leaves your main mixer as it is.
Most Geelong homes don’t need a whole-house filter for safety, because Barwon Water treats and disinfects the mains supply. People choose one to filter the water at every tap and shower, or because their home is on tank water or sees sediment. If you mainly want filtered drinking water, an under-sink filter is usually enough.
A correctly sized filter with a cartridge changed on time shouldn’t noticeably reduce your flow. A clogged cartridge or a whole-house filter that is too small for the home can. If your pressure has dropped since a filter went in, we can check the cartridge and the sizing.
Filter cartridges should be changed at the interval the manufacturer recommends, which depends on the filter and how much water you use. Slower flow from the filter tap, or the taste and smell coming back, are signs a cartridge is due. Keep the instructions and note the date of each change.
A filter may catch some sediment, but it won’t fix the cause. Barwon Water notes that ageing galvanised pipes can make water look brown, yellow or rusty. Barwon Water looks after the meter and the pipe up to it; the pipes after the meter are the owner’s responsibility, so a plumber should check them.
Yes. Homes on tank water often fit a sediment filter after the pump to catch grit and debris before it reaches the taps. We fit it with isolation valves so the cartridge is easy to change. See our rainwater tank and pump page for the tank side of the system.
